Overview
Barrettine Nourish and Protect Clear Universal Wood Preserver (NCPU) is a clear primer preserver offering protection against wood boring insects, wood rotting fungi and blue stain. Suitable as a primer under topcoats for interior and exterior use, including joinery in external walls such as doors, windows and their inner and outer frames, facades, carports, shutters and balcony railings.
Universal Wood Preserver can also be used in unoccupied areas such as ground floor joists, or where the wood is resting on the ground or hardstanding and only submitted to intermittent water, like garden products.

Not suitable for treating wood for any in-ground use or where the wood is permanently wet, for instance streams and ponds.

Preparation
Ensure that surfaces are clean and dry before treating with Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver. The prep required will depend on the type of wood you're treating.
- New wood - Generally no pre-treatment necessary, but if contamination suspected use a prior to treating.
- Renovation - Completely remove any coatings. Pre 1960’s paint may contain lead, so take special precautions. Grey or deteriorated wood should be sanded down to a clean, sound surface. Wipe surface to remove dust with White Spirit or Methylated Spirits.
Application
Test a small area first in an inconspicuous place to ensure compatability. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin.
- Shake well before and during use, for at least a minute.
- Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver should ideally be applied in frost free temperatures between 10 - 30 degrees celsius.
- Application of this product will affect absorption characteristics of any wood dye / stain to be subsequently applied. Test on off-cuts to determine process for obtaining desired shade.
- Apply 2-3 coats using a synthetic brush designed for solvent borne products, spreading out thinly and evenly, ensure end grain is thoroughly treated along with cut and drilled areas.
- Allow 6–12 hours touch drying time between coats. Some darkening of the wood may occur with successive applications of this product.
- Low temperatures, wood type and humidity may require longer drying times.
